“In The Same Room” — Julia Holter
I’m sure I’m not alone, but when I found out that Julia Holter released a new song, I was expecting something along the lines of her extremely difficult but undeniably beautiful Tragedy. Tragedy wasn’t an easy listen the first time I listened to it, and it wasn’t the second or third time either. But it unfolds and reveals itself to you, and it was a beauty of 2011.
So when I pressed play to hear “In The Same Room”, I was shocked to hear this straightforward, dream-pop-ambient song. It’s nice to hear her lovely voice throughout the song, and the melody is gorgeous. I’m liking the brevity of it: the brief moment of harpsichord, the brief moment of whistling, and the brief moments of a few keyboard notes.
The song reminds me of memories, and how we sometimes can only remember parts of the important ones. With that, the briefness and hints at things makes sense. You know exactly what she means when she sings,”I can’t recall his face, but I want to.” We can’t, but want—and hopefully that will get us something.
